The SUMMIT //Elimination Tournament

Rules

Seven maps will be played in Rounds mode with 2 Warm-Ups per map and a 15 seconds finish timeout. A map is finished once the first player reaches 115 or more points. 28 points will be rewarded to players finishing a run in 1st position – 1 point will be rewarded for finishing a run on position 16.
Players finishing a run on position 17 or behind will gain no points for this run. For more information on the distribution of points check out the corresponding chapter.

The maps will be ordered by difficulty. Expect rather simple / easy maps on slots 1 to 3 (the Preliminaries) and more challenging ones in slots 6 and 7 (Semi-Final and Final). The complete map lineup will be published one week before the tournament starts, ensuring enough time for proper preparation and training.

PRELIMINARY ROUNDMaps 1 to 3all players participate; Final score on all three maps will be summed up for each player; Top 12 will advance to the next round.
ELIMINATION 1Map 412 players; After map has been finished POS 12 and 11 will be eliminated
ELIMINATION 2Map 510 players; After map has been finished POS 10 and 9 will be eliminated
SEMI-FINALMap 68 players; Starting with run 4 the currently last positioned player will get eliminated after each run. If no player reaches 115 points after 7 runs the map will be skipped – all players left will advance to the FINAL

Edge Cases

A quite uncommon phenomenon in rounds mode is having players sharing the same amount of points at the end of a map. If this occurs outside of the relevant positions for the eliminations it isn’t a problem for the tournament mode at all (the final stage will be played with Tie Break activated, so we’ll have a winner sooner or later).

However there are some case in which we’ll have to apply some special rules for this exact situation:

  • If the last qualification slots are tied after the first two tournament stages (multiple 11th / 12th or 9th / 10th places): All tied players will advance to the next stage, but the elimination threshold will stay the same in the upcoming stage. For example if the 12th place after the PRELIMINARIES is tied and shared by three players all of them will advance to ELIMINATION ROUND 1 (played with 14 players in this case), but the amount of players qualified for ELIMINATION ROUND 2 will stay the same (10).
  • If the last qualification slots are tied after the ELIMINATION ROUND 2 (multiple 7th or 8th places): All tied players will advance to the next stage and the SEMI-FINAL will be conducted as usual. Once the SEMI-FINAL has ended a maximum of 6 players are allowed to proceed to the FINAL (Rankings 1 to 6, Rankings 1 to 5 if POS 5 is tied between two players, Rankings 1 to 4 if POS 4 is tied between three players). All other players left will be eliminated.
  • If the last position is tied after run 4 ot later in the SEMI-FINAL all tied players will be eliminated after the run. As soon as only four players are left the SEMI-FINAL is automatically concluded and all players left will advance to the FINAL.

Map Lineup

The map lineup is a graphical representation of the different stages as listed in the table above (please note the inverted depiction: It shows the way to the final from the bottom to the top) .
The lineup defines the maps driven in each of the stages – in other words: It shows which maps will be played for example in the preliminaries as well as which map will await the participants aiming for the final.

Once the lineup is published the maps and their given slots won’t change until the tournament, so the players can conduct their training without disruptions and uncertainties. An exception to this rule may be made if a map is revealed to be cuttable or other major reasons prevent their usage in the tournament. We’ll have a few maps ready as a backup in such cases and will announce the replacement as soon as possible on all available channels.

The first 16 players reaching the finish will acquire the following amounts of points depending on their position:

1st place28 points
2nd place24 points

Example

If someone finds this explanation of the underlying concepts and rules still too hard to imagine in pure theory it may prove useful to have a look at the spreadsheets we use to manage the tournament and determine the winner. The following document contains an example how a SUMMIT tournament could have turned out. It contains the results of all tournament stages, the overall result, who qualifies for the next stage, who doesn’t and how the individual stages look like from a more detailed point of view.

We’ll use the exact same format for the spreadsheet and data in a real tournament too, so as a side-effect you’ll get a feeling for interpreting a published result correctly in the future.

Variations

While the basic rules and the overall character of the tournament shouldn’t change too much, there’s still room for adjusting the “defaults” to some extent if it seems appropriate:

  • If the amount of participants during the PRELIMINARY ROUND is 18 or greater:
The number of players qualifying for the ELIMINATION ROUND 1 should be increased from 12 to 14. In this case each of the ELIMINATION ROUNDS will eliminate 3 players (instead of 2). This will ensure a bit more playing time for some players while keeping the number of remaining players reaching the SEMI-FINAL at defaults (8 players).
